Parent Education Corner

What is knowledge? "Plato regarded knowledge neither as a possession of something outside the mind nor as a measurable state of mind, but as a logical process attending the activity of learning. His definition of knowledge as an activity of learning rather than as a condition of having learned is important to the idea of a classical education. To begin with, his definition allows for no analytical separation of knowledge from responsibility."

NW ACCS Regional Choral Concert - Fri., Nov. 11 [6:30pm]

The Oaks is excited to welcome area ACCS schools to this year's NW ACCS Regional Choral Festival on Friday, November 11. Oaks 9–12th grade choir members have already been hard at work preparing the mass choir numbers, as well as an individual choir selection which they will be performing that evening. For all 9–12th grade students, the day begins at 8:30am and continues through the evening's concert. All Oaks families, friends, and grandparents are invited to attend the evening's concert, beginning at 6:30pm in the gymnasium. Your supportive presence would be greatly appreciated.

Individual Picture Day - Fri., Nov. 18

Picture Day is scheduled for Friday, November 18. Holding picture day on Friday this year means that formal uniforms will not be needed on an additional day of the week. Leo's Photography will be taking individual photos only at this time. Class photos and the all school photo will be taken on Friday, February 17 along with any re-takes. *Please note that both of these Fridays are the Friday prior to a break (Nov. 18–Thanksgiving & Feb. 17–Mid-Winter).

Update to Uniform Policy Re: Personal Grooming

Please read below the updated Oaks student personal grooming guidelines, as now found in the Uniform Policy (and within the Student-Parent Handbook). This update is seeking to clarify expectations while upholding The Oaks' longstanding grooming policy. The past several years we have been remiss in fully embracing the guidelines. This year, with the kind assistance of students and parents, The Oaks will fully and joyfully comply with these guidelines.

*PLEASE NOTE: To further clarify this policy the statement "The school administrative staff is responsible for the final decisions regarding Personal Grooming and Dress Code matters." has also been added.

Personal Grooming: Students should demonstrate neat, traditional, conservatively oriented choices in their hairstyle and accessories. Choices should enhance beauty rather than attract attention, thus building on a school culture of truth, goodness, and beauty. Our ladies and gentlemen will keep their hair clean and well groomed. Gentlemen will keep their hair groomed in a traditional style, short in length with the back length no longer than the top of the shirt collar, the sides not below the earlobe, and not in their eyes. Gentlemen's hair is not to be bleached, dyed, highlighted, nor cut or worn in an ornamental manner. It should not be cut or styled in a way that draws undue attention to self. Facial hair for gentlemen is not acceptable. Ladies will keep their hair groomed in a traditional style and may be highlighted in natural hair colors. Ladies may wear hair accessories that match uniform colors. Please show preference to smaller size accessories. Hats are not acceptable in school buildings for either gentlemen or ladies.

Grooming guidelines are considered the standards for all Oaks Activities and Events.

The school administrative staff is responsible for the final decisions regarding Personal Grooming and Dress Code matters.

Label Items to Minimize Lost & Found Piles

As a reminder, please label all of your child's belongings from uniform items, to lunch boxes, and everything in between. Many items are brought to the office's lost & found simply because someone does not know how to reunite these lost items with their owners. Taking the time to make sure you have properly labeled your possessions can help keep our lost & found piles low.

Enhancing the Family Night Experience

Special thanks to Mr. Williams and the team of volunteers for hosting The Oaks' Fall 2022 Family Nights. Looking forward to the next event, here are a few suggestions to enhance The Oaks Family Night experience for everyone.

  • Eat dinner as a family alongside other families.
  • Be an active part of the games by wearing your Oaks swag & cheering on the teams.
  • Take the lead in supervising your children before, during, and after the games. This event is not designed for children to be unsupervised.
  • Family Nights are designed for families to come together & enjoy family fellowship while supporting our student athletes. GO OAKS!!

…but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.

*9–12th grade students participating all day and through the evening's concert

The Northwest ACCS Choral Festival is right around the corner on Friday, November 11th! Oaks 9–12th grade students will have the privilege of hosting students from other regional ACCS schools for this day of fellowship and music making which will begin at 8:30am and culminate in a concert at 6:30 in the evening. Both lunch and dinner will be provided for the day and shared with all attending schools. Not only will students participate in the mass choir, but they will also have the honor of presenting a piece as an individual choir for the evening's concert. This event is a beautiful opportunity for our students to practice hospitality and grow in their love for God's people and His worship through song. We anticipate that all 9–12th grade students will enjoy hosting the entire day! In fact, The Oaks considers this a mandatory event. Please reach out to Mrs. Amy Kim if you have questions.

OCTOBER SCRIPTURE MEMORIZATION

What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

- James 2:14–17
