Parent Education Corner

"If you bury yourself in Psalms," writes Dallas Willard, "you emerge knowing God and understanding life." How does this happen? "We learn from the psalms how to think and act in reference to God. We drink in God and God's world from them. They provide a vocabulary for living Godward, one inspired by God himself. They show us who God is, and that expands and lifts and directs our minds and hearts." (The Divine Conspiracy, 1998)

At The Oaks, we want to make all of God's word central to our daily life, and we want to create a place where we can incarnate the ideals and virtues found in Holy Scripture. As Willard notes, the Psalms play an especially powerful role in transforming our lives (which is also why we have committed to reading Psalms and Proverbs as a school). In light of this, here are two questions to consider:
How can I make this season of Thanksgiving special through my attention to the model of Christian prayer found in the Psalms?
How can I bless my family by doing this in my home and around my hearth?

* Next Game - Fri., Nov. 18

Come cheer on The Oaks high school basketball teams as they compete in their first game of the season vs Spokane Athletic Coop. Instead of hosting a Family Night for this game, there will be pizza sold by the slice at the concession stand.

Would you consider serving a short shift at the next Oaks Family Night? Grab a friend or family member and sign up for a shift serving food, grilling, or cleaning a few dishes at the end of the night. It's a great way to serve the community and we'd be grateful for your help. All volunteers get a free meal and admission to the game!

NOVEMBER SCRIPTURE MEMORIZATION

Deal bountifully with Your servant,
That I may live and keep Your word.
Open my eyes, that I may see
Wondrous things from Your law.
I am a stranger in the earth;
Do not hide Your commandments from me.
My soul breaks with longing
For your judgments at all times.
You rebuke the proud–the cursed,
Who stray from Your commandments.
Remove from me reproach and contempt,
For I have kept Your testimonies.
Princes also sit and speak against me,
But Your servant meditates on Your statutes
- Psalm 119:17-23
