Christ's forty days in the wilderness is a faithful reenactment of Israel's unfaithful wandering in the wilderness after the Exodus. As we contemplate this during Lent, consider the second temptation of Christ in the Gospel of Matthew:
Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"
Consider what Hebrews says about Christ's faithfulness in the midst of trial and testing:
For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
How can we not praise God for His goodness to us in Christ and follow Him?
