A Thought To Savor

"I want a principle within of watchful, godly fear; a sensibility of sin, a pain to feel it near. Help me the first approach to feel of pride or wrong desire; to catch the wandering of my will, and quench the kindling fire."

– Charles Wesley (from a hymn on internalizing God's Word)

Gerard Manley Hopkins Poetry Competition
Semi-Finals – Fri., Feb. 13 [2pm] Championship – Tues., Feb. 24 [6:30pm]

The Gerard Manley Hopkins Poetry Competition aims to cultivate in students both good taste in words and a copious memory, who persuasively deliver poetry, and in all their daily speeches, "rightly handle the word of truth." The practice of memorized, memorable poem delivery completes and confirms an eduction. Poems tune the soul to Beauty, permeate the memory with Truth, and draw the will toward the Good. In short, the best poems are precise, permanent, and persuasive–particularly when masterfully recited.

Therefore, on or before February 6, Traditio classes will host an in-class competition, from which 1–2 students will be selected to advance to the semi-final competition. The semi-final will then be held on Friday, February 13 at 2:05pm in the Great Hall for the entire Logic & Rhetoric School and guests. Then on Tuesday, February 24th at 6:30pm the top 4 students will compete in the Championship round.

A curated collection of Poems is available for students to select from. If a student desires an outside poem, that must be cleared with their Traditio teacher.

January Scripture Memorization

And God spoke all these words, saying:

"I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall not make for yourself a carved image–any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands , to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is whithin your gates. For is six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's."

Congratulations Spokane Scholars!

Congratulations to our seniors who have been selected by The Oaks faculty to represent our school in the regional competition called Spokane Scholars in a category where each has excelled academically. Now in its 34th year, this annual scholarship competition, among 34 high schools, will award five students in six categories with cash awards in the amounts of $1,000 to $5,000. Oaks students have received one of these cash awards in 70% of the competitions since our school first competed in 2009.

The Oaks Spokane Scholars for 2026 are:
Mathematics–Anna Garriques
Science–Kyrie Hertz
Social Science–Ellie Williams
English–Adelaide Jones
Fine Arts–Hope Funchess

Spokane Scholars applications will be evaluated by a group of judges in March who will announce the cash recipient winners at a banquet at the Spokane Convention Center on April 20. Please join us in congratulating these seniors who have been selected for academic excellence.
