The ceremony will take place just before each varsity game–don't miss this chance to support and encourage our seniors! Go Oaks!

Gerard Manley Hopkins Poetry Competition
Semi-Finals – Fri., Feb. 13 [2pm] Championship – Tues., Feb. 24 [6:30pm]

The Gerard Manley Hopkins Poetry Competition aims to cultivate in students both good taste in words and a copious memory, who persuasively deliver poetry, and in all their daily speeches, "rightly handle the word of truth." The practice of memorized, memorable poem delivery completes and confirms an eduction. Poems tune the soul to Beauty, permeate the memory with Truth, and draw the will toward the Good. In short, the best poems are precise, permanent, and persuasive–particularly when masterfully recited.

Therefore, on or before February 6, Traditio classes will host an in-class competition, from which 1–2 students will be selected to advance to the semi-final competition. The semi-final will then be held on Friday, February 13 at 2:05pm in the Great Hall for the entire Logic & Rhetoric School and guests. Then on Tuesday, February 24th at 6:30pm the top 4 students will compete in the Championship round.

A curated collection of Poems is available for students to select from. If a student desires an outside poem, that must be cleared with their Traditio teacher.

January Scripture Memorization

And God spoke all these words, saying:

"I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall not make for yourself a carved image–any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands , to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is whithin your gates. For is six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's."

ATTIRE: Formal attire (also known as black tie attire) is more formal than business attire and slightly less formal than white tie. It is the most common formal dress code for events such as weddings, balls, formal dinners, and theatre.

When choosing your attire for this event please be mindful of both modesty and preferring others. This event is designed to be a blessing for all in attendance. Thinking of others when making your clothing selections helps to ensure a beautiful evening.

  • Ladies - formal, floor length evening gown or ball gown skirt (full coverage, closed back, preferably with sleeves-if wide strapped must be covered with a wrap; nothing revealing, strapless, or with high slits); simple, non-dangly jewelry; dress shoes; dress wrap or jacket - Ladies' Protocol Attire Ideas
  • Gentlemen - suit in a dark color, white shirt, and traditional bow tie or tuxedo (dark vest with suit jacket, pocket squares, cufflinks, and shirt studs are all acceptable); dark dress socks and dress shoes (no tennis shoes); no gloves, hats, or sunglasses. - Gentlemen's Protocol Attire Ideas

DANCE LESSONS & ETIQUETTE TRAINING: Parents and grandparents are welcome to attend any or all of the Protocol Waltz lessons and etiquette training as well.
